[Review] Little Women (2019)

Watching Little Women had me pondering question after question. What makes a great film, great? Then, that question expanded: what makes a great film, important? I still haven't got the chance to find answers and one thing came up: how is one deemed important anyway? The scale, the scope, the stakes? I found myself fascinated by one thing, then one fascination came right after another, and so on. Director-screenwriter Greta Gerwig, in this Louisa May Alcott's latest film adaptation, poses these deep-rooted thoughts about the importance of telling one's story, that the scope of sisters in their childhood and adulthood is as large as any other supposedly bigger stories. It's blunt and graceful, playful and firm, heartwarming and heartrending. Greta breaks down and analyzes Alcott's already modern writing, molding it into another form that further broadens Alcott's vision with intelligence, insight, and tenderness. 

Between the stories, themes, and characters Alcott has brought, Greta finds an emotive core to sew the seams and hem the border of each parallel, allowing those separating lines to unite Alcott's intricate sense and sensibility. More than redefining its narrative structure and reharmonizing its source, Greta injects her expressive creativity into our consciousness: from introducing the characters as adults longing for their memories of childhood to giving them their bigger voices. With that amount of liberty, she alters things but the heart remains congruent. One thing to note is how Greta is not afraid to go beyond Jo's story to mirror Alcott's real-life struggle. Here, Alcott's clear-cut persona is always present and valued, not just as the distinguished writer, but a woman with her own unique, empowered thoughts—an homage in the highest form.

We're no stranger to a non-linear narrative, but Greta's interpretation conveys determined gravitas. Those specific timelines sustain specific purposes, helping us understand the endeavor that stands between chasing ambitions and the haunting memories that follow. Her interpretation shows that one's life is not merely a one-way journey where everything moves forward in a prospective canon, life is also a reflection of memories, one that could be reframed as both an introspect and a retrospect. But these characters are not always talking about big dreams, it's about the complexity and the correlation of everything: womanhood, childhood, marriage, freedom, loneliness, love, and its lack thereof. These themes are presented skilfully through her acute understanding of dynamics: often overt, at times guarded, a mud-caked allure of growing up that brings overlooked inner agitations to light.

Greta's script shows a different way of viewing things, one that we may have seen before, yet her methods of creating such lens are very distinct—for one thing, she gets the point. She gets her way around each character, giving them grounds as well as delivering us answers of "why are they here?". She simply sees them as people trying to live their lives and paints them so, creating a space between us and the characters to breathe for one moment but leaving us in one room so we can recognize each other from a near distance. We see ourselves in Saoirse Ronan's Jo: her willingness to strive for something regarded as radical is powerful yet the absence of companionship in her life is perfectly intelligible. On the other hand, we also mirror Florence Pugh's Amy as she unravels the long-buried side of her perspective, bridging a gap between a misunderstood character we thought we knew and her true native wit. How Greta embraces reality with delicacy on one end and firmness on the other has become the singularity in her art since Lady Bird—or her early collaborations with Noah Baumbach—but her reinvention of this beloved, familiar story has created a new larger surface for us to walk onto, a warm quilt for us to take time and be engrossed in this intimate life's intricacy.

[List] Oscars 2015: The Winners!

Malam penganugrahan bagi industri film Hollywood telah resmi digelar, itu artinya selesai sudah awards season kali ini. Dipandu oleh Neil Patrick Harris, Birdman berhasil keluar dengan 4 buah Oscar, termasuk untuk Best Picture, Best Director, dan Best Original Screenplay, menjadikan Alejandro Gonzales Iñárritu dengan sukses memborong 3 piala dalam semalam. Sementara itu, The Grand Budapest Hotel juga mampu menyamai raihan total Oscar Birdman dengan kemenangan besarnya di berbagai bidang teknis. Di belakangnya, secara mengejutkan ada Whiplash, yang mampu membawa pulang 3 Oscar, termasuk Best Supporting Actor untuk J.K. Simmons. Sementara untuk Best Actor, dimenangkan oleh Eddie Redmayne, setelah kompetisi sengitnya dengan Michael Keaton dalam Birdman.

Di ranah Best Supporting Actress, seperti yang telah banyak diprediksikan, dibawa pulang oleh Patricia Arquette dalam film Boyhood, dan jangan lupakan speech-nya yang mampu membuat seorang Meryl Streep berdecak kagum. Dan, setelah sekian tahun, finally Julianne Moore won an Oscar! Setelah 4 nominasi dan 4 kali pulang dengan tahan hampa, di nominasi kelimanya, Moore akhirnya mampu membawa pulang sang piala emas lewat perannya sebagai penderita Alzheimer dalam Still Alice. Di dua kategori animasi, Walt Disney Animation menang besar. Big Hero 6 mampu membawa pulang Oscar untuk Best Animated Feature, sementara film pembukanya sendiri, Feast, juga mampu menyabet Best Animeted Short Film. [List] Oscars 2015: The Nominees!

I know it's a bit late, but still better than never. Finally, it's here! Birdman dan The Grand Budapest Hotel, imbang dengan total raihan 9 nominasi, diikuti 8 nominasi oleh The Imitation Game, serta Boyhood dan American Sniper yang masing-masing meraih 6 nominasi. And as usual, it's still full of snubs and surprises. Kekecewaan terbesar? Gone Girl. Ya, salah satu film terbaik tahun ini, dengan salah satu screenplay paling well-written, dinahkodai oleh sineas sebesar David Fincher, dan ada wanita karismatik di lini depannya. Namun, secara mengejutkan, sekalipun mendapatkan nominasi Best Actress bagi Rosamund Pike, ia gagal untuk mendapatkan nominasi lain, termasuk untuk Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, dan Best Score. Bukan hanya Gone Girl yang almost left shut out, tapi hal yang sama juga dialami Selma, yang hanya mendapatkan 2 nominasi untuk Best Picture dan Best Original Song, sementara kesempatan Academy Awards membuat sejarah baru, yaitu menominasikan sutradara wanita kulit hitam pertama, Ava Duvernay, dalam kategori Best Director juga akhirnya tak terjadi. Di kategori akting, kita kehilangan beberapa nama. Di mana Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Chastain, Jennifer Aniston, dan Amy Adams? Meskipun saya kecewa terhadap absennya Gyllenhaal dan Chastain tahun ini, namun rupanya absennya nama Adams dan Aniston membawa kita pada salah satu kejutan.

Ya, the most pleasant surprise of the night: Marion Cotillard got recognized! Ya, siapa sangka di kategori Best Actress, dimana terdapat 4 wanita yang sebelumnya dianggap akan secara pasti mendapatkan nominasi dan meninggalkan satu slot tersisa yang saat itu dianggap akan menjadi either Jennifer Aniston or Amy Adams, namun pada akhirnya malah menjadi nominasi kedua bagi Marion Cotillard? Di luar dugaan pula, Bradley Cooper is becoming Oscar darling. Sejak 2013 lalu, namanya masih setia bertengger sebagai nominee, bukan hanya sebagai produser American Sniper untuk Best Picture, juga termasuk untuk Best Actor, bersama Michael Keaton, Steve Carell, Benedict Cumberbatch, dan Eddie Redmayne. Di kategori Best Picture, judul-judul seperti Birdman, Boyhood, The Imitation Game, The Grand Budapest Hotel hingga Selma memang telah diprediksi sebelumnya, namun ada sebuah kejutan kecil di dalamnya: Whiplash! Tak banyak yang memprediksikan Whiplash mampu meraih nominasi Best Picture, namun jelas kehadiran film indie ini adalah kejutan menyenangkan. And.. here are the nominees. [List] Oscars 2014: The Winners!

Perhelatan Oscar telah digelar. Hasilnya, hampir seperti perkiraan saya, Gravity menyabet 7 piala termasuk Best Director, kendati Best Picture diraih oleh 12 Years a Slave, yang membawa pulang total 3 piala, 2 lainnya adalah untuk Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) dan Best Adapted Screenplay. Dengan kemenangan 12 Years a Slave sebagai Best Picture, itu artinya Brad Pitt telah mendapatkan Oscar pertamanya berkat posisinya sebagai produser dalam film ini. Sementara itu, aktor besar lainnya, Leonardo DiCaprio tampaknya harus menunggu lama lagi, setelah Matthew McConaughey mengambil Oscar pulang untuk kategori Best Actor. Hal yang sama pun dialami Amy Adams, yang telah dinominasikan sebanyak 5 kali termasuk untuk kategori Best Actress tahun ini, yang dimenangkan oleh Cate Blanchett.

Peristiwa di mana sang pendatang baru diapresiasi lebih kini terjadi lagi. [List] Oscars 2014: The Final Predictions!

Tinggal sehari lagi menuju Oscar, dan untuk merayakan itu, mungkin ada baiknya kalu kita 'bermain tebak-tebakan' tentang siapa yang akan berjaya besok. Prediksi ini bukan hanya berdasarkan selera pribadi, tapi juga dari pertimbangan lain seperti berkaca pada Oscar tahun sebelumnya ataupun perolehan penghargaan selama award season tahun ini.

BEST PICTURE

Siapapun tak akan ada yang menyangkal kalau pertarungan memperebutkan tropi utama ini sebenarnya hanyalah sebuah two-horse race competition antara Gravity dan 12 Years a Slave, well mungkin bisa ditambah American Hustle sebagai pemanis di antara keduanya. Namun, sudah hampir jelas, di antara keduanya lah yang nanti akan membawa pulang penghargaan yang ditunggu-tunggu ini. Menilik penghargaan yang telah didapatkan, 12 Years a Slave mungkin lebih unggul dalam Producers Guild Award serta Best Picture dalam Golden Globe, BAFTA, dan CCA. Namun Graviy punya kans yang tak kalah kuat dengan memenangan semua kategori Best Director dalam Directors Guild Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, hingga CCA, di mana biasanya kategori yang satu ini mempunyai peran besar dalam Best Picture. Berkaca pula dari tahun lalu, di mana film tentang sejarah Amerika (Lincoln) mampu dikalahkan oleh thriller menegangkan (Argo), mampukah Gravity melakukan hal yang sama? Bisa saja, namun untuk saat ini, i'm rooting for 12 Years a Slave.

Kalau ditanya yang satu ini, semua orang mungkin akan mempunyai suara sama: Alfonso Cuaron! Dengan visinya yang revolusioner, siapa yang tak senang melihat perjalanan sang sutradara dari film lokal Y Tu Mamá También, menyentuh Hollywood dengan Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (seri Harry Potter terbaik menurut saya) seta Children of Men, hingga akhirnya (hampir pasti) mendaratkannya sebuah Oscar berkat Gravity!

Final choice: Alfonso Cuaron, finally!

Or... : Steve McQueen, namun it's just too obvious kalau Cuaron yang akan bersinar. Maaf, McQueen!

Di ranah ini, akan terlihat jelas bahwa Matthew McConaughey is on his way to get his first Oscar. Tapi, berapa kali Oscar telah mencampakkan seorang Leonardo DiCaprio yang seharusnya telah menyimpan Oscar di lemarinya sejak ia membintangi What's Eating Gilbert Grape? Jawabannya adalah 3 kali. Mungkin tak sebanyak Glenn Close, Peter O'Toole, atau Amy Adams, namun berapa tahun lagi ia harus menunggu? Well, mungkin ini merupakan keputusan yang cukup sulit bagi para voters. Everybody wants to hear another 'alright, alright', but... who doesn't like a pleasant surprise for the big actor?

Siapa lagi yang akan segera mendapatkan Oscar keduanya kalau bukan Cate Blanchett? Ada kemungkinan bagi Sandra Bullock, tapi bukan tahun ini, yang jelas. Bagaimana pula dengan Amy Adams? Kalau saja Oscar akhirnya ingin memberikannya Oscar setelah 5 kali dinominasikan, apa pun bisa terjadi. Namun, mungkin Oscar akan berbaik hati padanya pada nominasinya yang ke-6. Adalah sebuah kejutan yang amat menyenangkan melihat seorang Barkhad Abdi yang diapresiasi di ajang BAFTA beberapa waktu lalu, namun kompetisi ini adalah (hampir) sepenuhnya milik Jared Leto seorang. Memerankan seorang transseksual penderita AIDS, satu-satunya penghalang baginya hanyalah Master Michael 'Epps' Fassbender yang doyan menyambuk budak kesayangannya, yang kelihatannya mampu Leto lewati dengan cukup mulus.

Dari semua kategori, inilah kategori yang masih penuh ketidakpastian. Tapi, apakah Oscar mau memberikan Oscar kedua bagi Jennifer Lawrence di umur ke-23-nya, sedangkan seorang Kate Winslet harus menunggu lama untuk mendapatkan Oscar pertamanya? Satu-satunya yang harus dilakukan oleh John Ridley saat ini adalah menyiapkan speech-nya.

[List] Academy Awards 2014: the Nominees!

I can see snubs everywhere! Inside Llewyn Davis hampir saja pulang dengan tangan hampa, kalau saja ia tak dinominasikan untuk Best Sound Mixing dan Best Cinematography. Sisanya? Tak ada Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay, hingga Best Director. Berbicara tentang Best Director, kalau tahun lalu Ben Affleck secara mengejutkan tak menjadi salah satu nominator, maka kali ini Paul Greengrass (Captain Phillips) lah yang juga menjadi tumbal. Beralih ke Best Actor, absennya Robert Redford mungkin tak terlalu mengejutkan, karena ia pun absen dalam SAG. Namun, yang paling mengejutkan adalah hilangnya nama Tom Hanks (Captain Phillips) dalam daftar nonimasi tersebut. Tak hanya itu, dalam Best Actress, Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks) yang selama ini diunggulkan dalam kategori Best Actress, nyatanya juga tak hadir dalam daftar. Dalam ranah animasi, meskipun bukanlah tahun yang terlalu baik bagi film animasi, termasuk bagi Pixar, tetap saja Monsters University yang absen tetaplah salah satu kejutan terbesar bagi saya. Duo frontrunners, Stories We Tell serta Blackfish yang juga dianggap sebagian orang bahwa mereka pasti akan mendapat nominasi dalam Best Documentary, ternyata salah besar. Dan, yah, setidaknya ini membuat kesempatan lebar bagi film-film lain untuk bersinar di kategori ini, termasuk my favorite, The Act of Killing.

Kini, mari beralih ke berita bagus. Gravity dan American Hustle, keluar sebagai peraih nominasi terbanyak, yaitu 10 nominasi, termasuk Best Picture, Best Director dan Best Actress. Untuk American Hustle sendiri, Oscar tampaknya memang benar-benar menyayangi David O. Russell, karena setelah setahun lalu ia juga berhasil mendapat seluruh nominasi akting lewat Silver Linings Playbook, tahun ini, American Hustle juga mampu membawa 4 nominasi tersebut. Gravity sendiri, selain sukses di kategori utamanya, ia juga sukses besar dalam kategori teknikal, meraup 7 nominasi, dan kemungkinan besar akan membawa pulang banyak dari kategori teknikal ini. Di belakang Gravity dan American Hustle, ada 12 Years a Slave, yang meraih 9 nominasi, termasuk Best Picture, Best Director, dan seluruh nominasi akting kecuali Best Actress. Masih seputar kabar baik, kejutan besar juga lagi-lagi hadir dalam Oscar kali ini. Ya, siapa sangka bahwa seorang Jonah Hill sekarang adalah 2 kali nominee Oscar? Kabar baik lain yang cukup mengejutkan datang dari Sally Hawkins, yang mendapat nominasi Oscar untuk pertama kalinya berkat perannya dalam Blue Jasmine.
